Building a lasting legacy is something we should strive to fulfill, if indeed it is a godly one. It should be our goal to see the next generation carry on a life for Christ just as the previous generation(s). What are the things of the faith that you are setting forth as a pattern for those observing your life from day to day of which they can latch onto? Some things are taught while many things are caught. People are watching you and taking note of who or what is truly your God. Sure, our example will be flawed, but most assuredly, our true heart’s desire can be discerned.
Abraham demonstrated a sincere heart of worship toward God in being known for building altars along his journey. He marked out, by way of the places of worship, how the true and living God had led him step by step (Gen. 12:8; 13:18). Thus, God’s faithfulness was brought to light by these constructs. God had been with him and Abraham was confident of His precious, guiding hand. The promises of God were also highlighted by the many altars that Abraham built. The land that he traversed was truly the promised land to Abraham and his descendants (Gen. 12:7). His worship was a time to remember God’s Word to him, and sure works for him and future generations. Abraham was, in essence, marking out the land God had promised to him for those coming after him through these altars. Furthermore, places of worship were erected to emphasize the majesty of God’s very nature. For instance, Abraham worshiped His God as the one who is “everlasting” (Gen. 21:33). The God of Abraham never changes, nor grows old and feeble. He is always able!
All of this glory that Abraham attributed to His God was not lost on his son Isaac. In fact, not only did Isaac carry on the tradition of worship, but also Isaac’s son Jacob did the same (Gen. 26:25; 33:20).
For I know him, that he will command his children and his household after him, and they shall keep the way of the Lord, to do justice and judgment; that the Lord may bring upon Abraham that which he hath spoken of him. Gen. 18:19
