Followers of Christ is what we are as believers in the living Lord Jesus, and what we intend to be throughout our days (Matthew 28:18-20). Knowing Christ and making Him known sums up the aim of our life’s work (Philippians 3:10; Ephesians 3:8-9). Our hearts beat with the desire for others to learn of Christ, know His love for them, and come to love Him supremely (1 Thessalonians 3:8). In order to make disciples of Christ it will take much time over a long period of time as neighbors, friends, family, co-workers, classmates and such view our Christian conduct and hear from us concerning our Lord. The initial life found in Christ grows into deep rooted faith through much disciplined effort, intense difficulty, and determination with intentionality. No disciple is completely like his Master overnight. Christ’s work is promised to continue until it is completed through His efforts in us (Philippians 1:6; Philippians 2:12-13).
Therefore, as we work out our own salvation with fear and trembling while allowing God to work in us, let us consider the “D” in DISCIPLE making as the necessity to Deepen Relationships. Christ walked with His disciples and experienced life with them in a variety of ways – from fishing with them, caring for sick loved ones, providing in financial struggles, helping during nature’s wrath and the like. In the very middle of the experiences of life, Jesus displayed a confidence in God the Father based upon a closeness to Him that the disciples could come to know. They saw it firsthand in Christ – the fact that nothing was impossible with God.
