The tendency to forget what God has said to me necessitates putting in the work to become a pupil that can regurgitate the most important things my Lord has relayed to me. At some points it is beneficial to know the chapter and verse to have ready reference at my fingertips. A DISCIPLE will make every effort of “S”ubmitting to Memory the Scriptures.
Psalm 119:11 encourages us to treasure up the Scriptures and have them placed deep in the recesses of our being for the purpose of conjuring those Words up at any given moment to defend against offending our Holy God as it states, “Thy word have I hid in mine heart, That I might not sin against thee.” Someone has said, “the best thing in the best place for the best reason”. The ability to recall the Scriptures from memory will also enhance our assimilation of its truths, and lend to clear guidance for life’s choices (increasing wisdom) and continued conformity to Christ’s likeness as the Holy Spirit uses the tool of the Word in our lives (building character). The Bible also refers to this exercise of placing God’s Word to memory as “renewing our minds”. So Romans 12:2 and Ephesians 4:21-24 give us the reasons for this renewal as previously laid out. No great amount of transformation will occur without the Words of Christ, our Master, penetrating and permeating the depths of our souls.
