There is in every persons heart among those of every nation a longing for a lasting peace. A peace that is not just externally realized but internally established. How can a person and the world come to an appropriation of such peace?
God promised through Abraham a blessing upon all nations for those that would accept God’s rule over them through His people Israel. Consider Genesis 12:1-3, "Now the Lord had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father’s house, unto a land that I will shew thee: 2 And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing: 3 And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.” The promise of God did not stop with the people of Israel, but had a person in view that would perfectly rule among the nations and in hearts that would receive Him. Genesis 15:1-6 was believed by Abraham and is required of all people that are seeking peace to accept, "After these things the word of the Lord came unto Abram in a vision, saying, Fear not, Abram: I am thy shield, and thy exceeding great reward. 2 And Abram said, Lord God, what wilt thou give me, seeing I go childless, and the steward of my house is this Eliezer of Damascus? 3 And Abram said, Behold, to me thou hast given no seed: and, lo, one born in my house is mine heir. 4 And, behold, the word of the Lord came unto him, saying, This shall not be thine heir; but he that shall come forth out of thine own bowels shall be thine heir. 5 And he brought him forth abroad, and said, Look now toward heaven, and tell the stars, if thou be able to number them: and he said unto him, So shall thy seed be. 6 And he believed in the Lord; and he counted it to him for righteousness” (see also Romans 4:3-5; 23-25 as related to 5:1 Romans 5:1 "Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:"). That “seed” as we know from Galatians 3:16 was speaking of the Christ. Christ came to usher in eternal peace for souls at enmity against God, and the nations that have been at odds with God’s plan for Israel as they would come in submission to the Prince of Peace of Isaiah 9:6-7 "For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: And the government shall be upon his shoulder: And his name shall be called Wonderful, Counseller, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. 7 Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, Upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, To order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice From henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this.”
"Come Thou Long Expected Jesus", and "Angels from the Realms of Glory" rightly reference Haggai 2:7 as referring to Jesus at His first advent with a view, no doubt, to a coming day of consummation! Jesus is the “Desire of all nations”, that longing hearts find as their greatest joy, and the Angels announced as the one bringing to earth “peace, goodwill to men”!! This peace is offered to all who will receive the Lord Jesus Christ, a lasting peace of heart and life to come.
