1 Kings 18:19-40
Elijah was a very courageous, although misguided in his estimation that he alone remained a prophet of God. Although there were others, he stood alone on Mount Carmel, toe to toe against the many ungodly and idolatrous prophets of Baal. Elijah did not shy away or back down in this immensely spiritual clash. He knew that God + 1 is a majority.
1 Kings 18:21–22 And Elijah came unto all the people, and said, How long halt ye between two opinions? if the Lord be God, follow him: but if Baal, then follow him. And the people answered him not a word. 22 Then said Elijah unto the people, I, even I only, remain a prophet of the Lord; but Baal’s prophets are four hundred and fifty men.
How could he stand up for the Lord in the face of such opposition? To speak up and challenge the people of Israel, and then to throw down the gauntlet to the 450 false prophets of a false god must have been just a bit nerve-racking, to say the least. What ammunition (spiritually-speaking) would Elijah utilize in this battle for the souls of the nation in order to display God’s glory?
1 Kings 18:24 And call ye on the name of your gods, and I will call on the name of the Lord: and the God that answereth by fire, let him be God. And all the people answered and said, It is well spoken.
Elijah knew that the Lord God of Israel was the one and only true and living God! All the gods of the nations were impotent, inanimate and ignorant. It was only the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob (Israel) that could hear and answer with fire from heaven since He was the creator of all things and the Sovereign Lord. Therefore, Elijah prayed in faith, believing God would act in accord with His omnipotence, immanence, and wisdom.
1 Kings 18:29 [for the prayer of the prophets of Baal] there was neither voice, nor any to answer, nor any that regarded.
1 Kings 18:38 [in response to Elijah’s prayer] the fire of the Lord fell, and consumed the burnt sacrifice, and the wood, and the stones, and the dust, and licked up the water that was in the trench.
GIRD ON EACH PIECE OF THE LORD’S ARMOR WITH PRAYER!
