"Nothing in my hands I bring, simply to Thy cross I cling ... Helpless look to Thee for grace...". No work of mine adds anything to the work of Christ in providing salvation from sin. In fact, trusting in any work of mine to save from sin negates the work of Christ on my behalf.
And if by grace, then is it no more of works: otherwise grace is no more grace. But if it be of works, then is it no more grace: otherwise work is no more work. (Rom. 11:6)
Either I am trusting in Christ, or I am trusting in my work. Salvation is a gift of God, not something I must do, but something I must receive by faith.
For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. (Ephesians 2:8-9)
My trust and my boast must be only in the cross of the Lord Jesus Christ. Jesus has paid it all and in Him is my eternal life.
I do not frustrate the grace of God: for if righteousness come by the law, then Christ is dead in vain. (Galatians 2:21)
But God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world is crucified unto me, and I unto the world. (Galatians 6:14)
What can wash away my sin?... Nothing but the blood of Jesus!
And from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, and the first begotten of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth. Unto him that loved us and washed us from our sins in his own blood. (Revelation 1:5)
